STEINMEIER TO VISIT SYRIA TOMORROW IN BID TO WIN SUPPORT FOR U.N. LEBANON PEACE RESOLUTION

Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will visit Syria tomorrow in a bid to win President Bashar al-Assad's support for the United Nation's Lebanon peace resolution.

Winning over Syria's ``constructive support'' for the peace resolution forged on Aug. 11 is ``very important'' to securing Lebanon's eastern border, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner told reporters in Berlin today. Steinmeier seeks to ease Syria's diplomatic isolation without offering concrete rewards for its cooperation, Ploetner said.

Steinmeier has taken the lead in trying to gain Syria's support for the UN resolution, using a window between today's cease-fire and a German Cabinet decision next week on a peacekeeping role. The Social Democrat will address reporters on the goals of his visit to Syria at Berlin's Tegal airport at 2:25 p.m. Frankfurt-time.
