WASHINGTON -- Thousands gathered across from the White House on Saturday, even
though the president was out of town, to condemn U.S. and Israeli policies in the Middle East.
Speakers in Lafayette Park energized the mostly Muslim crowd with chants and speeches condemning Israeli involvement in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, U.S. support for Israel and U.S. involvement in Iraq

Skeptical of a proposed cease-fire and decrying civilian casualties, thousands of protesters marched peacefully through downtown San Francisco and in cities across the country Saturday, calling for an end to U.S.-backed Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.
The Bay Area crowd of first-time protesters, longtime activists and families with children rallied at Civic Center before and after a march down Market Street.
``We're objecting to what the U.S. and Israel are doing in the Middle East, what they're willing to achieve by attacking, occupying and killing innocent civilians,'' said Enayat Katouli, a community college instructor and founder of an Iranian pro-democracy group in Oakland.

TORONTO (CP) - A protest for peace in the Middle East took on a distinctly anti-Israel tone Saturday as thousands of people from various backgrounds gathered outside the Israeli consulate to protest the country's war against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
Lebanese, Palestinian and even Six Nations flags flew over the heads of protesters as they rallied to demand Israel's immediate withdrawal from Lebanon, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
